Cortisol & Focus - What the stress hormone does in the body

Everyone knows stress! The technical term cortisol is not necessarily associated with the unpleasant feeling, an inner tense state. Nevertheless, it is part of life for many people almost every day. Whether at work, in the family, in relationships or as an inner-mental state, stress impacts body and soul a lot!

Cortisol or the state stress, which is triggered by the cortisol has its origin in the brain. Here the interaction of many thousands of important neurons triggers positive as well as negative stress depending on the situation. Depending on the amount of release, memory can either be promoted or completely blocked.

Stress can therefore have many negative, but also positive effects on the body and mind. If stress is present in moderation, it can promote concentration. It acts like a filter, which makes the important things appear very present and the unimportant things move into the background. This helps us, for example, in acute learning phases. What feels like pure overload, helps us at the same time not to lose focus in that phase.

However, if it becomes a permanent condition, it has particularly negative effects, both on our body and on our mind! Long-term stress weakens the immune system enormously. The permanent release of too much cortisol is exhausting for the body and is also not good for the soul. Depression can manifest itself or lead to excessive demands and thus to burn-out.

Those who have to struggle permanently and on a daily basis through their job or a difficult situation in their private life probably also suffer from permanent stress. In this case, it is very important to keep the cortisol level as low as possible in the long term or to lower it completely for short periods of time. Relaxation techniques such as yoga or meditation, sauna sessions, sports, good conversations or pleasant experiences can help here. Of course, a visit to the doctor is necessary if the stress turns into a depressive mood!
